Real Life Homeschool : Weekly Wrap-up

Happy Friday! This week we have been talking about real life in our homeschool world. Today is a typical post I do on Fridays that goes over what we did throughout the week. It's a look into our full week and the activities we did so we'll put it in our Real Life blog hop posts. You can catch up with me on Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3 by clicking the links.

In our school this week... We were progressing right along. We are loving the anatomy with Apologia and started drawing our cell this week. I can't wait to make the eatable cell with him probably the first of the week. He's loving the work and it's one of my favorite sciences to study. So this is a win win for both of us :).

I went ahead and ordered the second half of his Math Mammoth curriculum. I had thought we would keep going with the programs online we had been able to review. While he likes them, and so do I, I'm noticing he's getting bored with it. I also think he needs more handwriting and actual working out the problem. A trend I have noticed with many HS Mama's lately is they are talking about their kids figuring out how to beat the system. Basically they get the good grades because they figure out how to work the program to get done without learning the concept. So we are back to paper and pencil with a combination of online games/review. I think that works better for us.

Science classes started up again this week and he was super excited yesterday. They dissected a sheep eyeball. Eww.. Ok, I did dissections in Biology but not sure I'm ready for them yet again :). The class is on senses and of course sight was the one they talked about yesterday. He had a blast!

We will also be starting a new unit study next week that we will be reviewing. I'm excited about this one too and so is Boo Bear. He picked out the topic and of course , it was animals.

In our life this week... We are finally getting back to our routines. Chores, school, etc. We did go out to eat with my hubby's boss this week while he was in town. That was a nice change of pace for dinner. :)

Today is my birthday and I have to figure out if I want to stay home and have my hubby, the Grill Master, cook for me or go out. I'm not real sure yet. I LOVE when he grills and I honestly refuse to get a steak anywhere else ;). So what do you think? Stay home or go out?

A sweet friend of mine made this bracelet for me. :) She's quite artistic and I love her creations. Thank you so much!!

This week I'm also participating in a blog hop and Instagram challenge with the TOS Review Crew. Here's a pic of our Day 1 which was a selfie. It's funny how people are so different. Some are very used to taking them and others despise them. To be honest, sometimes it's the only way Mama's get in the picture because they are always behind the camera ;). I've been told he's my mini-me. What do you think?

We have a pretty full weekend ahead. A couple in our church is renewing their wedding vows for their 50th anniversary. I'm so thankful we are surrounded by couples in our church that have been married for what seems like forever. They feed into us and encourage us, as do our parents. Mine have been married for 37 years!

Today I'm thinking a little school work, a little baking in the kitchen and maybe going to see Home. What do you think?

Real Life Day 3: Field Trips Are Important

This week on the blog we're getting real. Real life homeschool. It doesn't always look like those pretty pictures we show on the blogs. That is the third or fourth take we've done for that one shot to make sure it looked good :). Real Life is messy. It's fun. It's frustrating. It's real.

You can check out  Day 1 and Day 2 posts if you like. I've shared a day in our homeschool and also that some days can be hard. It's true!
Today I'm going to talk about field trips. I admit it. Sometimes going to the grocery store can be a field trip because we just haven't gotten out of the house. I want to share with you how important taking field trips really is.
Field trips offer a lot more than just a day out of the house. They offer hands on learning, socialization with your homeschool group for the kids and sanity help for yourself. Sometimes we go just Boo Bear and I but it's still important. It's getting that hands on learning to reiterate topics you've gone over or to learn a new one.
Field trips can be to anywhere that learning happens. Take your children to the bank to learn about opening accounts and money management with their own savings account. Take them to the fire department/police department to learn what goes on behind the scenes of our everyday heroes. This past year we took one to a grocery store and learned how it operates. It was really informative and fun! Plus we got cookies in the end from the bakery ;)
Museums, fairs, exhibits, memorials are all good places to explore. Go out on nature walks or hikes in your area to do a nature journal field trip.
You can even incorporate field trips into your road travels for vacation or business. Research the area along the way before you leave and add some side trips in if possible. We did this recently when we went to visit my parents. We visited a Civil War memorial sight and ended up seeing a reenactment. That was pretty awesome!
Field trips do not have to be huge costly adventures. They can be free and low cost when you take some time and plan them out. To me, those can be even more fun that the more expensive ones!
A few tips on field trips that I find helpful are:
  • Try to plan with your homeschool group or friends (groups get lower prices)
  • Don't stress about doing bookwork that day. It will come tomorrow
  • Have fun!!!
  • Find something that interests your child
  • Try to do some research/studies before and after you visit the location you have chosen
I'm going to give you an example of a field trip we take pretty regularly. Boo Bear's eye doctor is in the next city over from us. It's about a 45 minute to an hour drive. There is a free museum that he LOVES to go to so every time we are in that town, we go.

Thankfully the last few times we have gone have been scheduled when there was a different visiting exhibit each time. We got to see a T-Rex named Sue and the Megalodon shark. We have even seen Titanoboa. All of these visiting exhibits are favorites of his. I mean come on. Dinosaurs AND Sharks within a month of each other??

I have to admit that sometimes we do a lot of field trips and sometimes we go weeks without one. I'm trying to get better at scheduling those field trips and sticking with them. Sometimes it's hard to get a whole group together. Everyone has crazy schedules. But I'm making a plan to myself to go anyway. Even if I don't have a huge group, we can still have fun and go anyway. :)

How often do you take field trips in your homeschool? Do you have favorite places you go repeatedly?

Creative Cooking Day 3: Almond Flour Pork Chops

I decided in March to go gluten free/wheat free for myself. I have some medical conditions we have talked about before that I thought it might help if I tried it. I decided to give the Paleo/Primal lifestyle and to be honest, it works for me. It helped me feel so much better and I have tried to stick closely to it since then. I have lost weight, felt better and have seen the bloating and stomach troubles I had before go away. Now if I go back to eating wheat, it makes me pay for it. So why eat it when I have found some great new ways to go without it?

I have tried a couple of new flours since started gluten free but I have to be careful which ones I use. I am a Type 2 diabetic so just using regular old gluten free baking mixes are not always a great answer. I am thankfully coming off of some medicine so this is helping the diabetes to get better too! One of the ones I have absolutely fallen in love with is the Almond flour. I have used coconut as well but it takes a little getting used to. The almond flour does not have an off taste added to the food. You can season it as much as you want. I also like it because it is a lower carb way to batter your items.

The items I used for this recipe was some thick pork chops. You can use this to batter different items.

Almond Flour Pork Chops:

1 lb of pork chops
almond flour
1 egg
water
oil for your skillet

Heat your skillet up to a medium heat. I had really thick cut pork chops so I butterflied them first. Then I used my meat mallet to pound them out a little thinner. That way they do not take as long to cook. If they are too thick your batter gets burnt and your meat is still raw sometimes. Mix your egg and some water in one bowl to make your egg wash. Pour some almond flour and seasonings into another dish to bread the pork chops in. I used salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. You really can put whatever flavors in the breading you wish. Dip your pork chop in the egg wash and then in your batter. Place them in your skillet. Let them brown on one side then flip them over. Depending on how thick your pork chops are it could take 15-30  minutes to cook. Honestly I cook them until they are done and nice and brown on the outside. They are not hard to cook and you need to keep an eye on them so they don't burn. Here's a shot of the ones I had.

They really turned out pretty I thought ;). I don't put a lot of oil in the skillet because sometimes with almond flour it can get bubbly/foamy. So I just put enough to keep them from sticking and give it a nice brown batter to it.

I served these with green beans and rice. You can do whatever you like with pork chops such as mashed potatoes or a salad.

Homeschooling Through The Tough Times

Homeschooling is an adventure. You might have a picture of what your homeschooling adventure will/does look like, or at least what you hope. What happens when tough times come your way? This could be in the form of a move, surgery, death of a loved one, sickness. The list goes on and on. This year I am definitely learning about those hard times and how we can homeschool through them.

This year has been a wild and rambunctious one. My son has gone through pain and ended with surgery in the first few months of this year. We have dealt with sleepless nights and tears for more days than I want to count. We have had doctor's appointments, sickness... all mixed in with trying to continue on with our first grade year.

Guess who has learned from this experience? Mommy has! I have learned how to roll with the ups and downs. I have learned that homeschooling isn't just about book work and writing assignments. Yes, I knew that before but still we strive to have that "proof" of our work. I have learned that it's okay to let go. We need to relax, rely on the Lord and realize that work will get finished. It might not get finished on our time but it will get done.

So what did we do? We through in a relaxing trip to the Science museum. We read lots of books, watched educational videos, played games. We found ways to learn while dealing with traveling and days that we had too little sleep. We just stuck to the 3 R's when trying to do any actual schoolwork. Mommy learned to relax, let go and just breathe. That's what you have to do sometimes. Things will get finished. You will make it through that last book. Homeschool gives you the freedom to do that on your time. You can get through those times and come back where you left off. It will still be there waiting for you when your crisis is over.

Just remember to breathe, pray and let go. Life teaches you a lot of lessons that a book never will or can. Sometimes we might wonder why/what God has to teach us in a particular lesson but there's always something :) Be encouraged and know that you will make it through! God will get you to the next level and school will be waiting for you there! :-)

Tips For Us OCD Mommies In Delight Led Learning

A type of homeschooling that has become very popular lately is that of the delight directed path. This simply means following the leads of your child and what they are interested in at the time. Take a subject your child might be excited about, like cars, planes, bugs, and go with that topic. Make that what you learn about for a while in school. This can open doors for lots of different lessons and learning opportunities.

What about us Mommies that have to get out of the traditional, do your schoolwork in a desk, at a desk, write an essay at 7 years old mind frame? ;) ( maybe not an essay but....) I for one love to take this route with Boo Bear because I see the wheels turning but I honestly have a hard time letting go. I feel like we should do A, B, C and be done sometimes. Sometimes A lot of times that plan does not work as I wanted it to. ;) That's OK!!!!

I'm going to give you some tips, ( and myself) for those planning, slightly OCD, Mama's out there that want to do more delight led learning.

1. Take a deep breath. Count to 10 and realize these young years are going by super fast. You can take time to stop and talk about the slow moving caterpillar and the world will not come to an end.

2. Relax. Throw those plans to the side for a minute and let your science experiment you are working on go longer than planned. Encourage them to ask questions, change the variables to find out what would happen if...

3 Be flexible. I am working on this one myself. I am a planner, freaker outer, when it comes to deadlines and having every detail planned exactly out. That's a downfall for me at times when it comes to homeschool. I might not go off into the never never land he does sometimes because I'm worried we have to do X,Y,Z before this date. I'm learning that things don't always go as you planned them and that's ok. It's a hard lesson for me but I'm learning it slowly.

4. Take a day trip. Nature and the world around us are full of learning opportunities. Learning does not happen only in a classroom full of colorful posters and crayons. It does happen there but this world is full of wonder and delight even in your own backyard. Spend time at your favorite aquarium, museum or park.

5. Listen to your child. You know what I've learned over the past two years of homeschooling? When they are learning about something they are interested in, they will learn a lot more than if I choose the topic ;) . If dinosaurs are the interest of the week.. go with it! It may only last a day or two but you can learn a lot when you are excited about what you are learning!

Don't be afraid you won't finish your programs. They will still be there when you and your child are ready. Relax and enjoy the adventures that await you when you are delight led. You never know where your child's imagination, and yours, can take you!!!

Make sure you stop by and enter the giveaway before heading onto the other blogs! There's over $1000 in prizes and it goes all week! Check it out here!!!
